Director's Statement:

"Giữa đại dương ta hát tình ca is my wish for peace and happiness for my parents, whether or not I am still by their side. Developed and completed in just two weeks, the film grew out of a song I wrote for them ten years ago. It is also my attempt to reconnect with the place where I was born - Nha Trang, which ceased to exist as a city-level administrative unit in July last year.

For a long time, I carried a deep sense of guilt, believing that my arrival in this world had made my parents’ lives more difficult. I wanted to make this film as a way of freeing myself from that burden: to forgive myself, and to encourage myself for having existed and for continuing to exist. I also wanted to thank my parents for giving me such a beautiful childhood.

It took me a very long time to find the courage to write this statement and the ending of the film. I would also like to thank everyone who stayed beside me during this difficult period of my life and helped me find a more compassionate ending for these characters.

Ultimately, I hope the film can be told as a gesture of comfort, as an embrace for families that are not whole."
